SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE
Shakespeare’s Globe Tour is a guided
visit to the reconstructed 1599 open-air playhouse at 21 New Globe Walk,
Bankside, run daily by The Shakespeare Globe Trust. A Guide leads you round the
auditorium for 50 minutes, and the ticket holds roughly two hours on
site once you add self-guided time in the exhibition. Adult entry costs £31,
under 16s pay £14, and every under-16 needs an adult alongside them.
The building carries the detail visitors
come for. Oak frame, lime plaster, and the only thatched roof licensed in
London since the Great Fire of 1666. Groundlings stand in the yard under open
sky, three tiers of galleries ring the stage, and the timber structure sits a
few hundred yards from where the original burned down in 1613. Guides tell the
story of the plague years, the fire, the 1990s rebuild driven by the American
actor Sam Wanamaker, and how the wooden ‘O’ works as a performance space now.
Bankside offers more than one building. The candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse stands next door, The Golden Hinde sits ten minutes away on foot, and Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge and Borough Market lie a short walk along the river.
SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE ON BANKSIDE
Bankside was London’s theatre district
long before the South Bank became a cultural quarter, and the Globe anchors it.
The playhouse you walk into opened in 1997 after decades of campaigning, built
with green oak, wooden pegs and traditional joinery rather than steel and
screws. Historians and craftspeople worked from the excavated footprint of the
Rose and the surviving Globe foundations to get the diameter, the gallery pitch
and the stage cover right.
Performance still drives the place.
Actors play to a standing yard in daylight, without microphones for much of the
season, as companies did when Shakespeare wrote for this stage. That
working-theatre status shapes your visit, and ticket prices and start times
follow from it.

Tickets for the Globe Theatre Guided
Tour sit at £31 for adults and £14 for under 16s, with a £3 transaction
fee applied per order rather than per person. Groups of up to 30 book at a
discounted rate, and school parties follow the same route with a talk pitched
to the year group.
Tours run daily and start every half
hour, though the last slot moves earlier on performance days because the stage
goes over to the cast. Morning visits between 09:30 and 12:00 are the
safest bet in summer, when matinees take the afternoon.
Plan for two hours in total. Roughly 50
minutes belongs to the Guide, the rest is yours in the exhibition, where
costumes, props and printing demonstrations fill the gaps. Booking direct
