St Paul's Cathedral Wren's masterpiece.
St Paul’s Cathedral Tour is a
sightseeing visit to Sir Christopher Wren’s domed cathedral at St Paul’s
Churchyard, London EC4M 8AD, open for sightseeing Monday to Saturday from
08:30 to 16:30, with last entry at 16:00. Adult tickets start at £24
and children’s tickets at £9.50, and both include the Cathedral Floor,
the Crypt, the Dome Galleries, a multimedia guide and any free guided tour
running that day.
Wren rebuilt the cathedral after the
Great Fire of 1666 destroyed its medieval predecessor, and the building was
declared complete in 1711. The dome rises 111 metres and weighs roughly 65,000
tons, which kept it the tallest structure in London for 250 years. It survived
the Blitz, hosted the funerals of Nelson and Wellington, and framed the wedding
of Charles and Diana in 1981.
Three galleries sit inside and outside that dome. The Whispering Gallery lies 257 steps up, where the curved wall carries a murmur across 34 metres of open space. The Stone Gallery follows at 376 steps, and the Golden Gallery caps the climb at 528, with the City, the Thames and the South Bank laid out below.
WREN’S MASTERPIECE OVER THE CITY
Wren’s design took 36 years to build
and broke with everything English cathedrals had done before. The dome copies
no Gothic model. It borrows from St Peter’s in Rome and hides a brick cone
inside, carrying the weight of the lantern while the outer shell keeps its
proportions from street level.
Details reward a slow walk. Grinling
Gibbons carved the Quire stalls, Jean Tijou forged the wrought-iron gates, and
William Richmond’s mosaics glitter above the altar. The American Memorial
Chapel behind the high altar commemorates the 28,000 United States service
personnel based in Britain who died in the Second World War. Seeing all of it
depends on the ticket you hold.

Sightseeing tickets start at £24 for adults and £9.50 for children, and that price already includes the free guided tours running that day. Groups of 15 or more drop to £21.60 per adult.
528 steps reach the Golden Gallery at the top. The Whispering Gallery comes first at 257 and the Stone Gallery at 376, so you can stop at either without finishing the climb.
The Whispering Gallery is an internal walkway around the base of the dome where the curved wall carries sound. A whisper spoken against the stone travels round to a listener on the opposite side, a quirk of Wren’s geometry rather than any deliberate design.
Nelson, Wellington and Wren occupy the best-known tombs, alongside roughly 200 further memorials to painters, soldiers and scientists including Turner, Reynolds and Fleming. It is the largest crypt in Europe.
Not for general sightseeing. Sunday belongs to worship, and services are free to attend. Dome Sundays tickets from £12 open the galleries only, so plan the full visit for a weekday or Saturday.
Yes, and booking a timed slot online costs less than paying at the door. The cathedral also closes to visitors during services, so we check the schedule against your date before setting the pickup time.
For groups and families, yes. St Paul’s station sits close, but the car keeps your belongings, waits through the visit and moves you on to the next landmark without a second journey underground.
We do. Windsor Castle, Oxford, Cambridge and the Cotswolds all work as day trips, and every route appears on our London tours page. St Paul’s Cathedral gives you Wren’s dome over the City, consecrated in 1711 and standing 111 metres above a floor plan that still follows his drawings.
