Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare's town.

Stratford-upon-Avon Tour is a chauffeur-driven day trip to the Warwickshire market town where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and buried in 1616, roughly 100 miles and two hours from central London by road. The town holds three of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s family homes, the parish church containing his grave, and the two riverside theatres of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Ticket prices set the shape of the day. Shakespeare’s Birthplace on Henley Street, sold with the New Place gardens, costs £25 per adult booked online and £12.50 per child aged 3 to 17, with timed entry slots. Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Shottery adds £5 per adult when bought alongside that ticket, or £15 on its own. Holy Trinity Church admits everyone free, with a £5 chancel charge to stand beside the grave.

Geography spreads the sites out. The Birthplace, New Place at 22 Chapel Street and the Schoolroom and Guildhall sit within a few streets of one another. Anne Hathaway’s Cottage lies a mile west across the fields at Shottery, and Holy Trinity stands at the far end of Old Town beside the river. A car covers those gaps in minutes rather than half an afternoon.

Below you’ll find what each property holds, ticket prices and combinations, the story behind the grave, how RSC performances fit a day trip, the drive up from London, and the questions travellers ask most before booking.

SHAKESPEARE’S TOWN ON THE AVON

Stratford earned its market charter in 1196, and the half-timbered frontages along Henley Street, Sheep Street and Chapel Street survive from the Tudor and Jacobean centuries that followed. Shakespeare’s father John worked here as a glover and wool dealer before serving as bailiff, the town’s senior office.

The playwright returned wealthy. He bought New Place in 1597, the second largest house in Stratford, and died there in 1616 at the age of 52. Only the footprint and gardens remain, since a later owner demolished the building in 1759. Each Trust property tells a different part of that arc, and the ticket you buy decides how much of it you see.

SHAKESPEARE’S FAMILY HOMES AND TICKET PRICES

Three Trust properties open to general visitors, and the pricing rewards buying them together:

Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Henley Street. £25 adult and £12.50 child online, £27 and £13.50 at the door. Timed entry applies. The price includes New Place gardens, and live actors perform speeches on request in the garden.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shottery. £15 adult and £7.50 child on its own, dropping to £5 and £2.50 as an add-on. The thatched farmhouse holds Hathaway furniture, and the grounds run to orchards, a willow cabin and woodland sculpture.

Shakespeare’s Schoolroom and Guildhall, Church Street. £10 adult and £5 child alongside the Birthplace ticket. The upstairs room is where Shakespeare studied Latin, and costumed teachers run Tudor lessons through the day.

Concessions run at £21.25 for the Birthplace and £12.75 for the cottage online. Under 3s enter free everywhere, and every Trust ticket stays valid for 12 months of return visits. Note that Mary Arden’s Farm and Hall’s Croft, which older guidebooks list, remain closed to general visits and now host school groups only. The fourth essential stop charges separately.

Around two hours each way via the M40, covering roughly 100 miles. Leaving central London before 08:00 avoids the worst of the outbound traffic and gives you a full day in the town.

Shakespeare’s Birthplace with New Place gardens costs £25 per adult online, and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage adds only £5 when bought with it. Children aged 3 to 17 pay £12.50 and £2.50 respectively, and under 3s go free.

Three open to general visitors: Shakespeare’s Birthplace on Henley Street, New Place gardens at 22 Chapel Street, and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Shottery. The Schoolroom and Guildhall adds a fourth, and Holy Trinity Church holds the grave.

In the chancel of Holy Trinity Church, next to the altar and beside his wife Anne. The church is free to enter, with a £5 charge for the chancel, and the grave carries his own curse against anyone moving his bones.

It sits one mile west in Shottery, about four minutes by car or 25 on foot across the fields. Most visitors drive, since the walk eats time better spent in the gardens.

Yes, and it’s a common request. Matinées suit an early start with the houses done by lunch, while evening performances leave the afternoon open. Book the tickets yourself, then send us the times.

No, we don’t sell tickets, and booking direct with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust gives better availability on timed entry. Tell us the slots you hold and the route is planned around them.
