Tate Modern Tour is a chauffeur-driven
visit to Britain’s gallery of international modern and contemporary art at
Bankside, London SE1 9TG. Admission to the collection is free for everyone,
with no booking needed, and the gallery opens 10:00 to 18:00 Sunday to
Thursday and 10:00 to 21:00 on Friday and Saturday. Last entry falls 30
minutes before closing.
Arriving by car needs a plan. Tate Modern
has no visitor parking, and none exists in the surrounding streets
either, which is why the gallery’s own advice sends people to public transport.
The drop-off point sits on Holland Street directly outside the main entrance,
so a chauffeur puts you at the door and waits out of the way instead.
Inside, the building does half the work. The former Bankside power station holds the Turbine Hall, five storeys of open space that stages a rotating programme of monumental commissions, while the Tanks below ground show live performance and video in raw concrete drums. Picasso, Matisse, Rothko, Warhol, Yayoi Kusama and Tracey Emin all hang in the free displays across the Natalie Bell and Blavatnik Buildings. Free guided tours run most days at 12:00, 13:00 and 14:00.
FROM BANKSIDE POWER STATION TO NATIONAL GALLERY
Giles Gilbert Scott designed this
building as an oil-fired power station, completed in stages between 1947 and
1963 by the architect who also gave Britain the red telephone box. Generation
stopped in 1981, and the shell stood empty for two decades.
Herzog and de Meuron won the conversion,
and the gallery opened in May 2000, taking the international modern collection
across the river from Millbank. The chimney rises 99 metres, kept deliberately
lower than the dome of St Paul’s opposite. A second phase followed in 2016,
when the Blavatnik Building added ten floors of galleries and terraces to the
south.

and needs no advance booking. Walk in through the Turbine Hall ramp on Holland
Street or through the Blavatnik Building from Park Street, any day of the week.
Hours reward evening visits:

Temporary exhibitions carry tickets,
and several concessions apply: visitors aged 16 to 25 join Tate Collective for £5
exhibition tickets, up to four children aged 11 and under enter free per
adult, and 12 to 18 year olds pay £5 on family tickets. Disabled visitors pay a
concessionary rate with free companion entry, and Members walk into any
exhibition without booking. The free displays alone fill an afternoon.

No. Tate Modern provides no visitor parking and the surrounding streets have none either. Twelve accessible bays off Park Street are the exception, bookable 24 hours ahead through Tate ticketing.
On Holland Street, immediately outside the main entrance, with a separate coach point on Southwark Street. Your chauffeur waits nearby and returns to whichever entrance you choose.
The Turbine Hall is the five-storey space that once held the power station’s generators, now used for commissioned installations at a scale no other British gallery matches. Entry costs nothing.
Tate Modern shows international modern and contemporary art on Bankside. Tate Britain covers British art from 1500 onwards at Millbank. Both are free, and the RB2 boat runs between them every 30 minutes.
Two hours covers the Turbine Hall, one wing and the view. Three to four hours takes in both buildings and the Tanks with a break, which suits a first visit.
