Cotswolds tours at your own pace.
A Cotswolds tour is a countryside day
through England’s largest National Landscape, formerly an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, covering nearly 800 square miles across five counties of
limestone hills, dry-stone walls and villages built from honey-coloured
Cotswold stone. The wool trade of the medieval centuries paid for the churches,
market squares and weavers’ cottages that visitors photograph today. The
nearest villages lie around two hours from London, and unlike a city day
trip, no railway line threads through them: Bibury, Castle Combe and the
Slaughters have no station at all, which is why how you travel shapes the
entire day.
Group coaches leave Victoria at about
8:30 for a nine and a half hour circuit of three or four fixed stops, and their
own reviews record the recurring complaint that the schedule feels rushed.
Coach parks also sit five to ten minutes’ walk outside most villages, and the
single-track lanes linking the prettiest hamlets stay off limits to anything
that size.
Westway Ride offers the alternative: a private chauffeur who collects you from your door, threads those narrow lanes coaches cannot reach, and drifts from one limestone village to the next with no timetable but your own. Every route is bespoke, drawn from the same chauffeured tour service that covers Britain’s other landmarks, driven by insured, DBS-checked professionals.
THE VILLAGES: BIBURY, BOURTON AND BEYOND
Bibury draws more cameras than any
other spot in the region because of Arlington Row, the terrace of 17th-century
weavers’ cottages that William Morris once called the most beautiful in
England. Bourton-on-the-Water, nicknamed the Venice of the Cotswolds, gathers
its low stone bridges over the shallow River Windrush, whose spring-fed flow
kept running even through the drought of 1976. Burford, the gateway village on
the region’s eastern edge, keeps a church with Christian roots reaching back to
the Anglo-Saxon period.
Castle Combe, regularly named the
prettiest village in England, rewards a quiet morning before the crowds gather.
Stow-on-the-Wold, the highest of the market towns, suits an antiques browse
around its square, and Broadway’s wide grass-fringed high street earned it the
title of the show village of the wolds. Upper and Lower Slaughter, linked by a
footpath along the River Eye, stay calm even in August because coaches
physically cannot enter. Between all of them run the stops that turn
sightseeing into a proper day out.

DISTANCE, TIMING AND THE PRACTICAL DAY
Practicalities first: the western
villages sit 90 to 120 minutes from central London depending on your start
point and the M40 or M4 approach, so an 8:00 departure buys a full
unhurried day. Expect five to six hours in the region itself, three or four
villages visited properly rather than six glimpsed, and a return to London in
time for dinner. Guests based in Oxford or Bath start closer and see more.
Walking stays optional throughout. The
car sets you down in each village centre rather than a distant coach park,
follows you to the far end of a high street if you’d rather not double back,
and waits while you wander a riverside path. That flexibility suits mixed
groups where grandparents and children travel together, and it depends only on
choosing the right vehicle.
Browse Our Elite Fleet
Choose from our range of luxurious cars, perfect for any occasion. Whether you need a sleek sedan for a business trip or a spacious SUV for a family vacation, we have the ideal vehicle for you.
VEHICLES FOR COUPLES, FAMILIES AND GROUPS
Vehicle choice follows headcount and
luggage. A First Class or Business Class saloon suits a couple on an
anniversary trip, the Mercedes-Benz Vito and the Business Van/SUV carry a
family plus a boot full of farm-shop purchases, and the 16-seat minibus covers
milestone birthdays and visiting relatives. Compare the options on the fleet page. Every car is
climate controlled and privately yours: no strangers, no shared seats. Trips
beginning straight off a flight also work, since a Heathrow
collection joins the M4 corridor that runs toward the southern wolds. With
the car settled, reserving the day takes minutes.

Three or four visited properly beats six glimpsed. Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe form the classic trio, with Stow-on-the-Wold or Broadway added for shopping and lunch.
The nearer villages sit about two hours away by road. An early start gives five to six hours in the region and still returns you to London for the evening.
Not usefully. Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham have stations, but Bibury, Castle Combe and the Slaughters have none, so a car remains the only practical way to link the villages.
Your chauffeur shares the history of the villages and the wool trade that built them while you explore each place freely. For accredited commentary, a Blue Badge guide joins the tour on request.
Yes, and you should. Name a pub in advance and we reserve the table; otherwise your driver recommends an inn or farm-shop café that suits the day’s route.
