Glasgow sits roughly 400 miles north of Heathrow — a 7 to 8 hour drive, or a 1 hour 20 minute flight on one of the hourly departures operated by British Airways, Loganair and Aer Lingus.
So let us be straight with you before anything else: if you can fly, fly. If you have already landed at Heathrow and hold an onward ticket to Glasgow, the section below on connecting flights is the one you need. If you want a comfortable surface alternative, the Avanti West Coast train from Euston reaches Glasgow Central in around 4½ hours and is genuinely pleasant.
A private car for this journey makes sense for a specific set of travellers and for those travellers it makes very good sense indeed. We cover who they are further down. What we will not do is pretend a 400-mile chauffeur run is the obvious choice for everyone, because it is not.
Most people searching this term have a long-haul arrival at Heathrow and an onward LHR–GLA flight. That is a flight connection, not a ground transfer, and you may not need a car at all.
On a single through-ticket (your long-haul and the Glasgow leg booked together, typically BA or a oneworld partner): follow the Flight Connections signage on landing. You transfer terminals airside, pass through a dedicated connections immigration channel and re-clear security. Your checked bags travel through automatically. Allow 60–90 minutes for a same-terminal connection and 90–120 minutes if the terminal changes — Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 are linked by free Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line services running every few minutes.

The road distance is approximately 400 miles (about 355 as the crow flies), and the drive takes roughly 7 hours of moving time — realistically 7½ to 8½ hours once comfort and driver rest breaks are included.
The route is almost entirely motorway:
Leave Heathrow on the M25, joining the M40 north at Junction 15 (or the M1 as an alternative)
M40 to the M42 around Birmingham, then onto the M6 north
M6 through Staffordshire, past Stoke, Manchester and Preston, up through Lancaster and into Cumbria — over Shap summit past Tebay, one of the most scenic motorway stretches in Britain
Carlisle, then the M6 becomes the A74(M) at Gretna, crossing into Scotland
A74(M) into the M74, north through Dumfries and Galloway and South Lanarkshire, into Glasgow
Where the delays are: the M6 around Birmingham (Junctions 4–10) and the M6 through Manchester and Preston (Junctions 19–32) are the two reliable pinch points, each capable of adding 30–45 minutes at peak. North of Lancaster the road is usually clear.

Fixed per vehicle, not per person, and inclusive of fuel, tolls, driver hours, meet & greet, flight tracking and waiting. Solo travellers will find flying cheaper; for groups of five or more the comparison narrows considerably.
No. You travel into London first — Elizabeth Line or Heathrow Express to Paddington, then across to Euston — and take Avanti West Coast to Glasgow Central, roughly 4½ hours on the fastest services. Total door to door is about 5h 45. The Caledonian Sleeper also runs six nights a week if an overnight suits you.
